At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter addressed "My Dear Bell." Expresses deep pleasure at receiving her letters. Reports he will not apply for a furlough and hopes to be home in five months. Encourages her to gain his mother's affections; "Perhaps you can see the object of this, if you can't maybe you will some day." Says he has rheumatism in his shoulder. Complains "This thing of sleeping alone don't pay."
