At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses letter "Dear Cousin." Apologizes for not writing more frequently. Says he is sick with a violent cold and severe headache as is his baby Carrie. Reports he sees Joseph's mother and brother daily. Informs Joseph of the many church revivals and conversions in the county. Expresses his desire for a "more respectable house of worship" for the Methodists. Mentions that Bell is all right.
