At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses letter "Dear Friend," and asks forgiveness for his delay in writing. Informs he "...got a representative in the army to carry a musket in my place..." Says the township still needs twelve men for the draft and "...they are generally offering about four-hundred dollars local bounty for one year." Comments the papers are filled with peace rumors, but he is not optimistic.
