At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Headquarters District of Memphis..." is printed at the top of the letter. Reports on a conversation with a friend where he said, "I had a girl at home whom my hopes for happiness in the future were centered." States Union General Napoleon J.T. Dana is now in command of his department in Memphis. Mentions snowy weather. Letter continues the next morning.
