At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses letter "My Dear Bro." Says he is sending him a box with ten dollars, a hat, a pair of cuff gloves, a necktie, three pairs of socks and two shirts. Reports he is done seeding except for the potato patch. Mentions he will use a steam thresher. Discusses the upcoming presidential election and writes "...you and I had better mutually agree to disagree..." Proclaims his loyal support "for the loyal patriot George B. McClellan." Envelope includes a three cent stamp and writing on the back.
