At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes a hike through a cave to his nephew, writing "After having followed the ravine to the river, we again turned about and began to retrace our steps, after pasing the cave we came to an old orchard, where there was an old dutchman gathering winter apples..." Recalls a story about a traveling man that they came upon.
