At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One set of correspondence containing 21 letters from George A. West to Mildred, his wife, and Suzanne, his daughter. The letters are from 1944-1945 while George was stationed in Burma. The letters are addressed to "My dear wife and child" but they are named within the letters. Suzanne is most likely a baby as he frequently refers to her as his babe.
