Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One map entitled A Map of Africa Shewing the supposed settlements of Ham, dated 1823. Contains the entire continent of Africa, as well as a small portion of the Middle East. The island of Madagascar is also included. The map outlines area of Africa and labels each region; "Negroland," Caffraria, Zenj or Zanguebar, Cushites or Ethiopians, Barbaray. The map also included some major cities along the coast like Morocca, Algiers and Tripoli.
