At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One map illustrated by Karl Smith and published by Linweave Quality Papers, and Chicago Paper Company dated 1958. The map features the United States as it was from 1784-1844. It includes the borders after the Louisiana Purchase in green. In yellow is the land not held by the United States. The date of a state's entry into the United States is featured under their name. The ocean of the map features illustrations of labeled period ships. Within the map are illustrations of Native American tribes, events, and animals. In the area of Canada there are two versions of the United States flag as well as a battle flag from the battle of Lake Erie in 1813. There is also a listing of the first 10 presidents of the United States. In the lower right corner is an illustration of a soldier and a ship. There is a listing of important events from 1787-1837. In the Gulf of Mexico; a listing of American firsts including 1784 when the first daily newspaper was established in Philadelphia, 1793, Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin, and 1828, Webster dictionary published. Scattered throughout the map are illustrations of events that took place between 1784-1844 including the first American steam railroad from Charleston to Savannah in 1830 and the move of immigrants towards Ohio Territory in 1795.
