Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph album consisting of cyanotypes, silver prints and printing-paper photos dated 1905 to 1908 related to Beekman Winthrop's governorship in Puerto Rico. Images depict the colonization by the American government; developing infrastructure; construction of railroads, buildings, and roads. Portraits include those of Taino people, Puerto Ricans and American engineers, land surveyors and ranchers.

Photographs within the album note locations within the island. Exact names of towns have not been determined. There are a variety of images of nature. Condition of photographs vary.
