At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph dated December 1947 taken by Myers from the American Red Cross. Image is of three female volunteers of the Circle Service Club wrapping Christmas packages for patients at a hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. Typed notes on the reverse side describes the veteran reintegration program made possible through the efforts of hospital volunteers and the Veterans
Administration of Tuskegee. Names included the women in the image; Mrs. I.K. Campfield, Edith W. Washington, and Mrs. T.M.
Campbell.
