At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph dated December 1947 taken by Myers from the American Red Cross. Image is of a group of teenage girls from Tuskegee Institute High School writing Christmas cards for patients at the Tuskegee Veterans Hospital. Typed notes on the
reverse side profiles the local chapter of Tuskegee volunteers as well as identifies the students in the image. Names included are Mary Carolyn Derbigny, Mrs. M.G. Young, Jeanne Johnson, Dona Cooper, Doris Stokes, Marjorie Holland, Rosemary Howell and Barbara Williams.
