At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newsletter entitled, "Alcatraz: Indians of All Tribes," dated January 1970. Includes the Alcatraz Proclamation. Features articles, opinion pieces, legislation, and correspondence written by indigenous peoples protesting against the use of natural resources for profit, as well as, writings on turning Alcatraz Island into a place of education rather than imprisonment. Introduction of publication includes a proclamation of their vision for buying the island from the government. Includes demands for those who are inhabiting the island as to prevent heath risks; artwork by Alvin Willie and Alan Harrison; poetry; radio advertisement and donation request.
