At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One typed letter addressed to Jackie Robinson dated November 13, 1962 from Robert F. Kennedy. Kennedy appreciates his comments from a letter sent on October 30, 1962. "There is no question in my mind that the progress which was made in the last 22 months will be sustained and accelerated in the next two years."
