At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter dated February 21, 1963, addressed to Norm Dujka. Details the journey from Camp Peddleton to Hawaii aboard a ship. Was seasick during the trip. Trainees are required to complete strength tests and swim a mile out and back with Jack the Ripper, a local shark. Has attempted to contact a mutual friend, Nancy Zeomeks but she wouldn't reply to his letters. Excited that there is a club that serves alcohol to 18 year olds. Describes military life in Hawaii composed of hiking, building rope bridges and using rubber boats.
