Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "New York" taken by United Press International dated July 19, 1964. Image is of a police officer looking at a brocken store front window of a furniture store, damaged during the Harlem riots. Wire transfer information claims that people smashed windows with "missiles," and that 30 people were arrested.
