At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "Running from the Police," taken by the Associated Press dated July 19 1964. Image is of Black residents of Harlem standing back from police officers. The wire transfer information states that the police were using nightsticks to break up a crowd that gathered for the funeral of James Powell.
