At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document of printed instructions attend the March on Washington, August 28, 1963. Includes the itinerary of the day, lunch schedule, meeting places, signs available to carry and scheduled activities for the day consisting of the rally at the Washington Memorial, march down Pennsylvania Ave., and main rally at the Lincoln Memorial. A note at the back of the flyer instructs people about the likely temper in Washington D.C. "There will be many, many people in Washington, and much confusion; the highest standards of a Victorian-type courtesy are in order."
