At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto entitled, "Stage Protest March," taken by the Associated Press dated March 16, 1965. Image is of a
crowd of Black protesters holding signs that read, "Gas is Nazism." Wire transfer information states that 2,000 people attended the protest in Atlanta, Georgia. They marched to the front of a federal building where they chanted "We Want Freedom Now."
