At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of "National Geographic," dated December 1969. Cover of issue consists of astronaut Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. A special issue of the magazine was a five-part story on the landing of the moon. Table of contents lists article "Man Walks on Another World," which is a photo essay chronicling the lunar landing and words by astronatus Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Other articles listed are "Sounds of the Space Age, From Sputnik to Lunar Landing," with a vinyl attached to the magazine; "The Flight of Apollo 11: 'One Giant Leap for Mankind' " ; "What the Moon Rocks Tell Us" ; and 'Next Steps in Space."
