At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter dated Visayas, P.I., August 7, 1945, to his sister, Helena. Signed by "Unk." Describes going to see the USO stage show of "Oklahoma" as delightful. Mentions that there is an atomic bomb being used on Japan that will have "such good results," and that he is enclosing a money order for $100.
