At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One manuscript document dated Andover, April 14, 1800, certifying Moses Dorman's near sightedness rending him unfit for military service. Document is signed by "Thomas Kittredge," the Regiment's surgeon. On reverse of document is a note from Captain Jacob Gould discharging Dorman from service until he "he shall be restored to soundness of Limbs & to his sight," below Gould's note is approval from Colonel Nathaniel Lovejoy.
