Remarks that he will do whatever possible to protect Jackson, "You may rely my dear sir that I shall exert my upmost not only to prevent you being injured, but great to benefit you." Addressed to General Henry Jackson in Massachusetts. Possible free frank indicated by Knox's signature on the address leaf.

Title: [An act repealing tax on spirits]

Printed by William Rose. An act in five sections. Announces the abolishment of duties on spirits as of 13 June 1797. Any distillery proprietors that do not meet the criteria set forth in section one of the act will be required to obtain a license and pay a certain amount per gallon depending on the capacity and content of each distillery. Furthermore, the act states that there will be a penalty of a fine equal to the amount for a license of six months, for anyone who engages in distilling without a license to do so.

Knox says Hodgdon can settle his own accounts with the Treasury better than he could. Is disappointed that some Philadelphia post notes, which Knox wanted to send to Hodgdon for remittance, have not arrived yet. John Jay, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Rufus King, a Senator from New York, wrote a newspaper article they uncharacteristically signed with their own names decrying the actions of Edmond Charles Genet, the French Minister to America. Genet was trying to outfit privateers to support the French revolutionary government, and Washington refused to support this breach of neutrality. Wants to make sure everything is clearly expressed so the "true intent and meaning" of the deal is known to all parties. Includes mention of Jean-Baptise de LaRoche and Madam Rosalie de Leval. Date is not listed, however, the majority of Knox's land dealings with the three parties mentioned above were in the years 1791-1796. Knox's working draft.
