At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto released by Associated Press dated October 30, 1956. Shows two women looking at, and praying beside, a pile of five caskets. The attached press release reports that the women are residents of Magyarovar, a town in West Hungary, they are praying over the five caskets from the 88 villagers who were shot before the town was taken over by Anti-Communist forces. The back of the photo is stamped with Associated Press information.
