At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Angelica to her Mother. Angelica mentions her Father and a letter he sent mentioning her mother is healthy again and looks better. She mentions sending seeds that her father asked for. Angelica also mentions that there is a possibility of her family coming to England to visit and asks that they bring her sisters. Angelica also writes 'I wish to god I had been a boy; or an old maid and then I had never left you."
