At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Final report of President Truman's Committee on Civil Rights. The report identifies race discrimination in virtually every area of American life such as education, employment, voting, and military service. Recommendations include: to establish a permanent Civil Rights Commission, Joint Congressional Committee on Civil Rights, and a Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice; to develop federal protection from lynching; a permanent fair employment practice commission; and to abolish poll taxes.
