At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from C.C. Westmoreland to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 28, 1974. Westmoreland supports the impeachment of President Nixon. Westmoreland comments that they are a registered Republican and mentions partisan politics, and a "world wide economic crisis." They write, "The country and the world must have strong leadership + moral authority to deal with the world wide economic crisis... The time has come to abandon partisan considerations."
