At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Carol Aminoff to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. Aminoff writes in support of the impeachment of President Nixon. She mentions the firing of the special prosecutor, Archibald Cox, and the altered tapes. She declares that, "The firing of Cox was the final affront to our Constitution."
