At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from J. Amielaui Armstrong to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. Armstrong writes in support of the impeachment of President Nixon. She mentions that people are scared. She declares, "Impeachment is urgently called for because of Mr. Nixon's violations of the Constitution and laws and defiance of the Courts, but is even more especially needed because of the instability making him hold the office."
