At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leslie Freing to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. Freing writes in support of the impeachment of President Nixon. She also mentions the firing of special prosecutor, Archibald Cox stating, "This diregard [sic] for the separation of power principle by the president."
