At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Parren Mitchell, the House representative from Maryland's seventh district, to Moorhead asking for his support in an effort to get the signatures of one million Americans to show support for the people of South Africa. Mitchell has pledged to get at least one thousand from his district and would like Moorhead to pledge the same from his district. This letter is on House of Representatives stationery.
