At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nancy's grandmother writes about the weather and that she has finished sewing Nancy's dress. She relays Monday's activities and the things she bought in town. She mentions Nancy's mother was tired and not well after having gone "across the river." Nancy's grandmother writes that Hattie Sue enjoyed dinner held at her house on Sunday.
