At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document is typed by Lt. Col. Hubert D. Barnes to the Adjutant General in Washington D.C. The weather is cold, rainy, and snowy. This has necessitated troop movement and fortification of resources. A Sanitary Engineer visited because Hoof and Mouth disease is prevelant. A chaplain visited to give Sunday service on November 10. The month was focused on training and observing enemy movement. Several instances of enemy bombing occured, and few rounds of artillery fire. A summary of destoyred and damaged materials is listed.
