At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"D-Day: Success and Challenges on the Beaches of Normandy," written by Chuck Vinch, reflects on the reasons behind the success of the Invasion of Normandy. Vinch attributes a large part of the success of the invasion to decieving the German's into believing that the Allied troops were planning a massive attack in Calais, as opposed to Normandy.
