At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at 9:00 AM, at the office. Talks about his being stationed in Portland [Oregon] and the shopping there. Says she feels as if she were in a play last night (referring to letter dated 23 April 1943) regarding meeting his sister's new boyfriend. Tells him she will write the Office of Service Benefits in Newark, N.J. about his allotment. Says she is going to the Opera and for Chinese food after with friends. Her friend Sarah has information, and the application forms, needed to join the OSS. Asks Moe to let her know if he is interested in this.
