At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Most likely the note sent to accompany the letter to Montagu-Dunk mentioned previously (GLC0954.14). Writes "I send you herewith a Letter which I have gotten accidentally & which I think worth your reading. If you would shew it to the Duke or Lord Loudon or any other Person there is no objection." Noted at the top as written on a Saturday morning. Gilt edges. Watermarked with a fleur-de-lis, V, backward C, L and VI.
