At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother to the war-time intelligence. Discusses the Spanish, who "have possessed themselves of all British settlements upon the Mississippi and are probably by this time in possession of St Augustine or Pensacola, or both as they had equipped a formidable squadron with 2000 land troops." Also speculates on speculation concerning the whereabouts of Sir Henry Clinton's fleet. Discusses family matters, including possible relocations.
