At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the upcoming presidential election of 1860. Severely criticizes President James Buchanan, stating "Mr. Buchanan has failed in all things." Among many others topics, includes reports on the activities of local and national politicians, a visit from the Prince of Wales to Boston, a yellow fever epidemic in Alabama, a Chicago murder, and various political conventions and meetings. Contains several small holes.
