At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Official copy signed clerically by W[illiam].F.A. Torbert as adjutant and Albert Ordway and countersigned by J.H. Chase.Orders all troops being sent to New York to report to Warrenton for transportation to that city. The regiments affected are the 2nd and 12th New Hampshire, 20th Indiana, and 1st Massachusetts. Copy made 16 December 1863.
