This collection consists primarily of covers from the Civil War period, combined six pieces of unrelated correspondence. The envelopes were collected from a wide number of cities, and both southern and northern states are represented. Most of the envelopes are illustrated, and these illustrations are most often patriotic in nature, featuring flags, soldiers, military leaders, quotations, and poetry. While many of these envelopes exhibit canceled postage, a few contain free franks, and at least one was unsent. The disposition of the contents of these envelopes is largely unknown. In the case of items #8, #28, #29, and #36, there is a letter to accompany the envelope. Items #37 and #58 consist of letters without accompanying envelopes.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
