At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Daily activities around the farm. Resumes letter two days later (3 November), and again mentions the outbreak of typhoid fever. He has heard that one fourth of Capt. William's company is sick, and that John Hervey [Harvey?] Voris accidently shot himself in the foot while sleeping on his rifle. Also discusses a letter relating details of the Confederate army's attack on Humbolt, Kansas.
