At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Travels to Switz[?] recently for a family meeting. Samuel Voris [relationship unclear] was buried the day they arrived for the meeting. Describes the effort at home to gather clothing for soldiers ("Jake Davis....says he has a wagon bed full.") Several at home have been striken with typhoid fever. Asks "Did your Reg. Run (Cowardly) at the green Briar fight?" Includes a clipping reporting Col. Baker killed, among other news.
