At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Referring to abolition, Sumner declares, "The cause is more than any man- Davis, Wade or Lincoln, & it must be saved. There must be harmony among our friends, & energy- oh my God! Energy in the Good!" Following his signature, continues "Energy in action & in ideas!- both!" Sumner is referring to Henry Winter Davis, Benjamin Franklin Wade, and Abraham Lincoln.
