At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes the receipt of the printed addition to Coxe's memoir on cotton and agrees with his ideas. Discusses the nation's agricultural prospects for cotton, grain, and tobacco, in regard to rival markets ("Britain seems intent on supplanting our cotton staple in her market") and political conditions in Europe. Indicates that he will ask Thomas Jefferson to review Coxe's article.
