At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the pursuit of Confederate General John B. Hood's army after Sherman's order to create the cavalry. Expresses Confidence that they will bring the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia under control, claiming that: "What 20,000 men well mounted with Spencer Carbines cant do, isn't worth doing." Also indicates he could get Rodenbough a place in the force. Discusses the recent campaign as well as personal and family matters.
