At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Announcement of Henry J. Ellet of Mississippi as Postmaster-General and Judah P. Benjamin as Attorney General. Proceedings of Louisiana legislature and the Federal Congress. Reference to attempt to shoot Lincoln. Page 2 and part of page 3 has a copy of the "Official Journal of the Convention of the State of Louisiana" -- contains 21 ordinances, each with a French translation.
