At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"An Essay" continues the previous issue's essay, promoting slavery as foundational to Christianity. A few letters to the editor on page 1 describe the condition of local Baptist denominations. An editorial describes the "Supply of Food" in the Confederacy and problems with the blockade. "Notes on the Times" reports on the Confederate victory at Chickamauga and Union preparations at Charleston, amongst other news items.
