At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Page 1 contains several letters to the editor describing mournful wartime conditions on the front, including from McGowan's Brigade and the 5th South Carolina Cavalry amongst others. One from Isle Hope bemoans their loss of a minister and asks for assistance in securing a new chaplain. "Notes on the Times" describes Union efforts to take back Fort Sumter. An article describes a "Hospital Scene."
