At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article titled "The Soldier's Trust" describes watching soldiers bid loved ones farewell on their way to battle. The author of a letter "To all S. C. Soldiers" promises to send the paper to any soldier who asks for one. Brief, didactic articles discuss country policy ("The Policy of the Country"), "Sympathy," hindered prayer ("Prayer Hindered"), and "Chaplains." An editorial titled "Southern Presbyterian Review" examines and critiques the Southern Presbyterian Review, another paper. "Secular News" includes riots in New York, movements of General Robert E. Lee, and raids in the West, amongst other items.
