At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In "Army Correspondence," a soldier's letter describes conditions in Virginia and reminisces. "The Dying South Carolinian" describes the pious death of a soldier. Editorials examine topics including treatment of Blacks ("A Disciple in a Blaze"), "Reconstruction" of the old Union, Southern women, etc. "Report of D. P. Gold, Colporter among the Soldiers" details the conditions of soldiers.
